Description

The Canada Goose Hiking Trail parallels the Des Lacs River in the Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge, just outside of Kenmare, ND. The northeast corner of North Dakota is seldom visited by tourists, but the few trails that exist in this area allow runners to see abundant wildlife as they follow rolling hills next to large rivers and lakes. The Des Lacs Refuge (meaning “of the lakes” in French) is a critical resting place for migratory birds including pelicans, grebes, ducks and geese. This trail follows an old refuge road that, some years at least, opens to one-way vehicle traffic for a couple weeks in the fall. The route starts and ends at the gates.
