Route: Cougar Traverse (WA)

Location
Washington, US
Distance
214.8 mi
Description

Mike Woodmansee created the 242-mile Cougar Traverse as a “bonus trek” and long challenge, far from anything else, in his 2003 book “Trekking Washington” (https://www.amazon.com/Trekking-Washington-Backpacker-Magazine-Woodmansee/dp/0898869048). The massive loop is the longest uninterrupted wilderness route in the lower 48 states. There are no road crossings, no possibilities to resupply, and no easy bailout options. The book rates the route as “toughest,” and suggests to do it in 10 days. “The Cougar Traverse is as elegant and challenging as it is simple.” — Mike Woodmansee
